This traditional Christmas song in Pangasinan language was believed to be composed by “Laki Aryon” (Grandfather Aryon) Hilarion De Leon of Alaminos City, Pangasinan, who lived at the close of the 19th century up to the early 1900’s. Currently, this traditional Christmas song is known to be sung in the City of Alaminos and in the municipality of Lingayen. Its music is reminiscent of the gentle yet joyous night of Christmas when, in the cold of night, the shepherd went to adore the newly born Jesus in the manger, as the song’s lyrics so narrates.

The Christmas song is usually sung by a primera and segunda even though there are many singers during caroling. The singers of Amandiego know how to harmonize the song so that it has been never heard that it is sung in unison. It is also a must that a guitar accompanies the singers so as to enhance the beauty of the song. More often, the owners of the houses that the carolers sing for participate in the singing and dancing, as the singers usually sway while singing and some participants dance the balse. Sometime an improvised drum made of a plastic container is used. In the olden days actual drum was used to maintain the beat of the song.

The beauty of the song lies in the exact combination of the lyrics and the melody of the song that makes it sweet to the ears even though it has a broken ¾ time signature.
